Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has opened up on his team’s mentality ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Chris Hughton After Goalles Draw

Following Ghana’s goalless draw against Namibia on Monday in a pre-tournament friendly, the coach said his team goes into the AFCON determined to do well to lift the trophy.

“How far we can go depends on how well we can perform. One thing I know: this is a group of players who want to do well. And when you have a group of players who are desperate to perform well, you never know what can happen and I certainly don’t want to be the head coach of a team that thinks it has no chance of winning.” Chris Hughton said in an interview after the match.

The Irish-Ghanaian tactician continued: “That has to be the mentality going into the tournament, but we know we have to play well. Things have to go the way we want, we have to be lucky with injuries and we have to be very optimistic that we can do very well.

CAN 2023 starts on Saturday January 13 in Ivory Coast.

The Ghana Black Stars will play their first match of the tournament against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14.
